Misterton, a mixed, developing community of 2,000 people, is located in
north-east Nottinghamshire, with the nearest large town being Doncaster,
some 12 miles to the north-west.
The village has a
special water environment, being bordered by two rivers - the Idle and
the Trent, with the historic Chesterfield Canal running through the
village. The rivers, canal and floodplain are important ecologically
and scenically. Furthermore, the setting of the village in rolling
farmland provides an important habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
Much of this farmland, known as the Carrs, is marshland drained by Dutch
engineers in the 18th century.
We are very much in
Wesley country, just six miles from Epworth, the birthplace of John and
Charles Wesley, and the same distance from Scrooby, birthplace of
William Brewster, founder of the Pilgrim Fathers. We are only half an
hour’s drive from Sherwood Forest and similarly the City of Lincoln.
We
published our Parish Plan in 2003, which included a ten-year vision
statement:
-
The community working for the good of the area, with residents both
young and old being proud of the area in which they live.
-
A
vibrant, economic environment with thriving businesses, enough jobs,
locally or within a reasonable traveling distance, and adequate
training.
-
A
healthy community with affordable housing, satisfactory health
provision for all – but particularly young and older people – and
more health services.
-
Lifelong learning and arts strategies.
-
An area in which people of all ages can enjoy sport and recreation.
-
An attractive environment, which make people want to live in and
visit the area
Misterton is an active, growing community, with a wide range of
facilities, services and social groups. It
is a caring, self-sufficient village, providing a wealth of activities,
facilities and services for all. The Misterton Centre, providing advice
and services, opened in March, 2007. The Parish Council has
secured grants of around £100,000 in recent years, mainly for improved
recreational facilities. It listens to villagers’ concerns and acts on
them.
Misterton has a thriving business life, with a wide range of shops and
services, providing direct employment for around 150 people. Our new
Co-op convenience store/post office, opened less than three years ago,
has recently had to extend. We are a developing tourist area, with
close links to many tourist attractions, and are just a few miles from
the new Robin Hood International Airport.
We
have a wide range of facilities, services and activities for young
people, including an excellent Primary School. We encourage young
people to get involved in village life, and we talk to them to seek
their views. The Parish Council introduced its Citizen of the Year
Awards in 2003, which includes a junior award.
We
are committed to the local environment, both natural and built. The
Parish Council adopted its Environmental Policy as long ago as 2000, and
ensures that its principles are followed in everything it does. The
Parish Council regularly comments on the need for infrastructure to
match development in our growing village.
Our
use of ICT is comprehensive and effective, with good provision of
training and facilities. We now have the Telly Talk videoconferencing
and BISCUIT systems at The Misterton Centre. However, we realise that
nothing stands still in the area of ICT, and we are ready to embrace
change whenever opportunities present themselves.
